Researchers Use Hubble Telescope to Reveal Cloudy Weather On Alien World

Weather forecasters on exoplanet GJ 1214b would have an easy job. Today's forecast: cloudy. Tomorrow: overcast. Extended outlook: more clouds.

A team of scientists led by researchers in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago report they have definitively characterized the atmosphere of a super-Earth class planet orbiting another star for the first time.
The scrutinized planet, which is known as GJ1214b, is classified as a super-Earth type planet because its mass is intermediate between those of Earth and Neptune. Recent searches for planets around other stars ("exoplanets") have shown that super-Earths like GJ 1214b are among the most common type of planets in the Milky Way galaxy. Because no such planets exist in our Solar System, the physical nature of super-Earths is largely unknown.
Previous studies of GJ 1214b yielded two possible interpretations of the planet's atmosphere. Its atmosphere could consist entirely of water vapor or some other type of heavy molecule, or it could contain high-altitude clouds that prevent the observation of what lies underneath.
But now a team of astronomers led by UChicago's Laura Kreidberg and Jacob Bean have detected clear evidence of clouds in the atmosphere of GJ 1214b from data collected with the Hubble Space Telescope. The Hubble observations used 96 hours of telescope time spread over 11 months. This was the largest Hubble program ever devoted to studying a single exoplanet.
The researchers describe their work as an important milestone on the road to identifying potentially habitable, Earth-like planets beyond our Solar System. The results appear in the Jan. 2 issue of the journal Nature.
"We really pushed the limits of what is possible with Hubble to make this measurement," said Kreidberg, a third-year graduate student and first author of the new paper. "This advance lays the foundation for characterizing other Earths with similar techniques."
"I think it's very exciting that we can use a telescope like Hubble that was never designed with this in mind, do these kinds of observations with such exquisite precision, and really nail down some property of a small planet orbiting a distant star," explained Bean, an assistant professor and the project's principal investigator.
GJ 1214b is located just 40 light-years from Earth, in the direction of the constellation Ophiuchus. Because of its proximity to our solar system and the small size of its host star, GJ 1214b is the most easily observed super-Earth. It transits, or passes in front of its parent star, every 38 hours, giving scientists an opportunity to study its atmosphere as starlight filters through it.
Kreidberg, Bean and their colleagues used Hubble to precisely measure the spectrum of GJ 1214b in near-infrared light, finding what they consider definitive evidence of high clouds blanketing the planet. These clouds hide any information about the composition and behavior of the lower atmosphere and surface.
The planet was discovered in 2009 by the MEarth Project, which monitors two thousand red dwarf stars for transiting planets. The planet was next targeted for follow-up observations to characterize its atmosphere. The first spectra, which were obtained by Bean in 2010 using a ground-based telescope, suggested that the planet's atmosphere either was predominantly water vapor or hydrogen-dominated with high-altitude clouds.
More precise Hubble observations made in 2012 and 2013 allowed the team to distinguish between these two scenarios. The news is about what they didn't find. The Hubble spectra revealed no chemical fingerprints whatsoever in the planet's atmosphere. This allowed the astronomers to rule out cloud-free atmospheres made of water vapor, methane, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, or carbon dioxide.
The best explanation for the new data is that there are high-altitude clouds in the atmosphere of the planet, though their composition is unknown. Models of super-Earth atmospheres predict clouds could be made out of potassium chloride or zinc sulfide at the scorching temperatures of 450 degrees Fahrenheit found on GJ 1214b. "You would expect very different kinds of clouds to form than you would expect, say, on Earth," Kreidberg said.
The launch of NASA's next major space telescope, the 6.5m James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), later this decade should reveal more about such worlds, Kreidberg said. "Looking forward, JWST will be transformative," she said. "The new capabilities of this telescope will allow us to peer through the clouds on planets like GJ 1214b. But more than that, it may open the door to studies of Earth-like planets around nearby stars."

Revellers usher in 2014 with a bang at Sydney Harbour

Fireworks explode over Sydney Harbour to usher in the new year, in Sydney January 1, 2014.

An estimated 1.5 million New Year's Eve revellers thronged Sydney Harbour on Tuesday to watch 7 tons of fireworks light up the bridge and the Opera House.

Organizers boasted that their crackers, rockets and bangers were louder and flashier than those that will follow in London and Berlin.

"I've never seen so many people in Sydney," said 90-year-old Dorothy Humphries, as she and husband Alf, 92, gave up their bid for a ringside seat and settled for a faraway bench.

"When we were younger you could just turn up on the night and get a good view."

A pre-bedtime firework display for children at 9 pm (1000 GMT) was followed three hours later with a 12-minute midnight extravaganza to welcome in 2014.

In between was a one-minute pyrotechnic blast that was the handiwork of Mambo clothes designer and Mental As Anything musician Reg Mombassa.

The Mombassa moment referenced Cranium Universe, a self-portrait of the artist showing the inside of his head filled with a constellation of stars and planets - a prospect that drew Sydney resident Jennifer Mason to the waterfront.

"I haven't done the fireworks for years," Mason said.

"I said 'let's do it' and we have!" Jakarta-born visitor Tiono Said was astonished at the massive crowds. "We didn't know you had to get here early," the 32-year-old said. "I think we'll just have to stand the whole night until the morning."

Better prepared were American visitors Meg, Lucinda and Beth, who booked their positions at Luna Park, near the bridge's north pylon, months ago.

"We always reckoned that Sydney was the place to be for New Year's Eve," Beth said. Simon Butler, a 63-year-old from the Sydney suburb of Marrickville, doubted the official claim that a quarter of the inhabitants of Australia's biggest city would be on the harbour at New Year's Eve. "They always say that," Butler said.

"But too many people anyway. I never go. Getting old is not for sissies. My knees can't take all that standing."

Across the Tasman Sea in New Zealand, authorities in Wellington were taking a similar attitude, choosing to spend big on a New Year's Day picnic and concert on Wednesday rather than on youth-oriented late-night fireworks on New Year's Eve.

But the North Island town of Gisborne, at least, gave a rousing New Zealand welcome to the New Year with its Rhythm and Vines festival. The star attraction was German-born internet mogul and one-time fugitive Kim Dotcom, who was due to wow the audience with his own band, performing six songs from his debut Good Times album.

Open letter to the organisers of the headies awards

This is a blast on the organisers of the popular entertainment award Headies;

What do you think guys?

Dear Headies 2013 Organizers;

Let me start by saying I am not just disappointed in you but u have just proved to us that Nigeria is not getting better any time soon. You have been manipulated by a greedy and hopeless telecommunications company (MTN) because they sponsored your event and you forgot the ultimate rule that awards are meant to be impartial and should be decided by the general public especially when u told us to vote. You distributed the awards among four MTN ambassadors (Iyanya, Davido, Praiz, and KCee) and just one Glo ambassador won (Waje). Is that not politics or is it coincidence? Now let us analyse.

The Headies 2013 was a flop, your stage was shaped like a models runway, the choreographers lacked ideas and didn’t interpret the music, I have seen a better performance from Nigeria’s Got Talent. What was the Gulder Ultimate Search theme song that was being played throughout the event?

Who on earth uses the Mavin slaves -Dr Shit popularly called Dr Sid and Tiwa Gabbage knows as Tiwa Savage as anchors of an event? Oh I forgot, the awards lacked credibility and substance.

Why did majority of the winners come from backstage, instead of coming from the crowd like it should be? I watched Nickelodeon Kids choice awards this year and it is far better than the over hyped Headies which was not properly planned and hurriedly done #shame.

Can you explain to us how Olamide won Best Rap Album? Olamide has commercialized rap, we cannot tell if he is a rapper or a singer. As far as I am concerned, he is just an entertainer like D’Banj. So where does Vector, Phyno, Reminisce and Illbliss who represent real hip hop/rap stand? Don’t forget that there is a big difference between commercial rap and real rap, all he sings about is remind us that he is from the street but to be sincere Terry G is more street than Olamide and Terry G is not even a rapper #justsaying.

How can Harrysong win most MTN most downloaded caller tune song for RIP Mandela? when did Mandela die and do u want to compare that dead song with other club bangers in the same category? Simple, it is because Harrysong is a label mate to your MTN ambassadors (KCee). In my opinion Jawon, Waje, 2 Face, Clarence Peters, Blackmagic and Davido deserved their awards.

How can Wizkid not win any award?

Someone who has been the most consistent and sought after this year. I am sure Wizkidd eclined an interview from you that’s why he didn’t win, in fact Wizzy should be the artiste of the year. Why did D’Banj, Burnaboy, Wandecoal, PSquare, Flavour not win anything? oh I know why, it is because they are Glo ambassadors.

Now explain to me why Sean Tizzle won the next rated award and he was in the same category as Burna Boy who is obviously more relevant and talented. We all know Sean Tizzle has the same old boring style and we can always predict his next song. Phyno too deserved the next rated award and how on planet earth did D’Tunes win producer of the year? Someone who recycled 1 beat 5 times (Kukere, Your Waist, Mama Eh, Lenu by Spicy, Kilogbe). So where does ace producer Del’B that produced the national anthemLimpopo stand? You are all insane!!!!!!

Infact, Headies, MTN and PDP should merge and start a new political party for the upcoming election in 2015. It should be named MHDP(Mtn Headies Democratic Party). We all know exactly what happened,MTN agreed to sponsor your event and they gave you the list of who should win. Our votes did not count; do you think we are blind and foolish like yourself? Instead of your greedy MTN sponsors to improve their network, reduce tariffs and contribute to the growth of the nation, they will be sending me SMS on how they gave free ipad and mp3 to those who sent an SMS to a code.

They spend all their time looking for how to extort customers and scam us with their ridiculous offers (free airplane and a trip to the moon). I am sorry to say sir but if u continue this way your company will fold up and collapse because you are not an epitome of integrity. I am speaking on behalf of majority of Nigerians who know the truth and are not afraid to say it.

Those who feel this letter is nonsense should not forget to curse, insult and threaten me on @baddestdjtimmy. after my last two open letters, I have been insulted, chewed up, spit out, as being very jobless, hopeless and a broke laptop DJ.

You guys don’t know how much I love the insults so it means I am doing a good job and it makes me stronger. So in conclusion, if u have the opportunity to host another award show, learn from your mistakes and let our votes count this time. Let those who deserve it win, is that too much to ask?

What Are the World's Best Places to See a Sunset?

GRAND CANYON, USA
When the sun goes down, the Grand Canyon turns up the Technicolor. Light reflects off layers of geological strata, revealing every hue of red and orange imaginable. Views are amazing from both the canyon’s South and North Rim, although you’ll bump into fewer tourists on the north side. Still, if you’re stuck on the south side, Yavapai Point and Hopi Point are musts.

BIRDMAN SHOW OFF PICTURES OF IMMACULATE NEW SOUTH BEACH MANSION

At this point in his life, Birdman is clearly a habitual stunter. Your record label selling over 500 singles worldwide and being a recent mainstay in the TOP 10 ON FORBES' HIP-HOP CASH KINGS LIST can do that to you. The Cash Money CEO recently continued his flexing forte, this time taking to INSTAGRAM to show off computer generated images of his swank new mansion in South Beach which is currently being constructed. According to Birdman, it will be finished by mid February. This crib comes complete with futuristic waterfalls, marble floors, flat screen TVs that descend from the ceiling, crystal chandeliers and of course red decor.

What's the best photo you've ever shot with a phone?

Just finished reading Jordan's post on his iPhone photo workflow (http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/23/5210112/the-verge-at-work-making-perfect-pictures-on-your-iphone) and it got me thinking - what's the best you've ever done? I'm especially curious about situations where a full-size camera may not have been appropriate (size, speed, safety, etc). I need a minute to find mine...get it started below.

Saturday Night Social: How Many Sex Toys Can $6K Get You?

According to a hilarious blind item on Radar yesterday, Jay Z and Beyoncé recently visited the New York sex shop Babeland so they could spend $6,000 on sex toys, which should make us all wonder: Did they buy a few really fancy sex toys, or did they buy a whole bunch of cheap sex toys to give away as ironic gifts? How far does $6,000 really go in the fancy sex toy marketplace? THE PUBLIC HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW.

Promoting Financial Inclusion with e-Payment

Globally, financial inclusion generally refers to people being able to get access to the formal financial institutions. Individuals are classified as financially included when they have or use a financial product or service.
In Nigeria, as part of efforts to address the problem of low level of financial inclusion, the Central Bank of Nigeria last year inaugurated a National Financial Inclusion Strategy aimed to increase the number of Nigerians that are included in the formal financial sector to 70 per cent by the year 2020.
Therefore, experts in the e-payment industry have stressed the need to adopt financial inclusion as a strategy for driving growth and profitability.

This was the consensus of the experts at the 3rd annual conference of Committee of E-Banking Industry Heads (CeBIH) held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state recently.
The conference focused on the need to maintain the impressive growth recorded by electronic payment courtesy of the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The conference was tagged: “E-payment Systems: Harnessing Opportunities for Growth and Profitability.”
According to the participants, the theme was in line with realities of today as banks in Nigeria seek for ways to grow the use of electronic channels.

The Chairman, CeBIH, Mr. Chuks Iku explained that the goal of the association is to promote adoption and usage of electronic channels in ways that would bring about financial inclusion of the un-banked and under-banked.
Also, the Executive Director, Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) Plc, Christabel Onyejekwe, said: “Are there opportunities for growth? Yes. Are we harnessing these opportunities for growth.”
In his keynote address, Onyejekwe pointed out the huge number of people outside the financial system as one of the opportunities that needed to be harnessed for growth.
She disclosed that only 28 per cent of registered Point of Sale (PoS) machines were active.
“This is a meagre 31, 000 active PoS out of the 158,000 out there, yet we have not even gone cashless across Nigeria. Less than 20 per cent of rural Nigerians have been reached by the mobile money operators (MMOs) and more than 45 per cent of Nigerians are yet to be banked.

“These are veritable sources of growth and development for us as a whole and we believe that the PoS business can be improved more, mobile payment we can deepen more and revitalised, and our drive for financial inclusion must be re-energised,” she added.
Also speaking on “Driving e-Payment and Financial Inclusion through Branchless Banking,” payment specialists with the World Bank, Robin Hofmeister, identified branchless banking as an effective tool of reaching millions of the under-banked and unbanked with electronic payment channels.
Hofmeister defined branchless banking as the delivery of financial services outside conventional bank branches using information and communications technologies and retail agents.
He also stressed the importance of mobile phones as one of the most effective means of delivering e-payment to the unbanked.
In addition, he pointed out the fact that 79 million Nigerians had access to mobile phones compared to 27 million banked Nigerians, arguing that with the right mobile money framework, mobile phones could be used to deliver banking services to more people.
On his part, the Founding Director, PEP Intermedius, Kenya, Frederik Eijkman disclosed that his firm started as a small microfinance institution in 2004, but today has become a financial supermarket which acts for multiple money transfer services, bill-pay partners, international remittance services, lottery agencies, government payment services amongst others.
“The result is that PEP currently offers a broad spectrum of payment services, making it the ideal transaction destination for both private as business customers”, he added.

According to him, his company achieved the feat through agency banking based on the developmental needs of the under-banked.
To successful operate agency banking,  Eijkman said there was need for a super agent, that would manage other agents, while sound business proposition must be made to the agents.
He said most importantly, banks must use existing retail infrastructures to deliver trust through technology, and use existing deployed technology.
His opinion was corroborated by the Chief Executive Officer, Mobikash, Kenya, Duncan Otienno who noted that: “Agency banking cannot work if the banks are far from the people.

“Nigeria is still far behind with agency banking. Giving the country’s population, Nigeria needs about 200,000 agents, and they have to collaborate to break even.”
But Emenike Eleonu of the CBN also pointed out that there was also the challenge of awareness about electronic payment.
According to Eleonu, who represented the Director of Banking and Payment System, CBN, lack of awareness was the biggest challenge to the cashless policy.
In his address, Governor Godswill Akpabio who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Lady Valerie Ebe, noted that despite the huge advantages offered by e-payment, Nigeria was yet to explore the full benefits of the technological advancement in the banking industry.

Argentine leader's new style isn't fixing economy

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — President Cristina Fernandez has tried to reinvent her image since her return from skull surgery. She's put aside the all-black wardrobe she wore for three years mourning her late husband Nestor Kirchner, and reshuffled her Cabinet. This week, her economy minister announced a new stimulus program.

Analysts, however, say what she really needs to do, and quickly, is take politically painful steps to contain inflation by dialing back government spending.

Restoring Argentina's sense of pride and sovereignty after its 2001 economic collapse has been the central goal of the Kirchners' "victorious decade" in the presidency. They renegotiated or paid off nearly all of Argentina's defaulted debt in ways that removed the supervision of international lending organizations, nationalized the pension system, retook control of the national airline and oil company, and dug deep into the treasury to redirect revenue to the poor.

But the years of 7 percent growth are over. Fernandez now "faces a rapidly deteriorating economy that demands profound and urgent measures, and there are no pleasant alternatives in sight," said Ignacio Fidanza, who directs lapoliticaonline.com, a website focused on Argentine politics.

Inflation has been at least 26 percent this year, more than twice the widely discredited official rate, private economists say. This forces rounds and rounds of wage and price negotiations that scare off investors and spark social unrest, like the provincial police strikes that set off looting across the country this month.

Governors promised pay raises that reached nearly 60 percent in some provinces to get officers back in the streets after the mob violence killed 13 people.

A 50 percent average raise for police would cost about $2.3 billion in 2014, but the officers represent just 15 percent of Argentina's 2 million provincial government employees, and with at least 28 percent inflation expected in the coming year, the rest won't be satisfied with less. If all 2 million get 30 percent raises on average, it would cost the equivalent of $10 billion in today's pesos, estimates Diego Giacomini, chief economist with the Economia y Regiones consultancy.

Printing more pesos isn't a sustainable alternative: JP Morgan estimates the peso will be worth 45 percent less by this time next year.

Economists figure Argentina's primary fiscal deficit, before making debt payments, grew to 2.6 percent of GDP this year. That's better than the U.S deficit of 4.1 percent of GDP, but Argentina can't attract international loans at market rates. Instead, it uses Central Bank reserves to buy fuel overseas, meet foreign debt payments and finance economic stimulus programs, reducing the reserves by nearly $13 billion this year, to $31 billion.

In all, the government had to spend $13 billion this year importing oil and natural gas, costing nearly $48 in hard currency for every $100 that agricultural exports brought into the economy, the Fundacion Mediterranea consultancy says.

"The ceiling that the debt once put on growth is now imposed by the energy deficit," said Ramiro Castineira, an analyst with the Econometrica firm in Buenos Aires.

The deficit has risen because long-term business investments have slowed even as the government stimulates the economy, subsidizes energy and transportation and expands welfare for the poor.

Significant new domestic energy supplies from Argentina's huge shale reserves remain years away, Economy Minister Axel Kicillof acknowledged this month as he promoted special deals and tax breaks to the world's biggest oil companies.

Meanwhile, Kicillof announced $1.5 billion in government-backed, peso-denominated business loans Monday, part of a $21 billion stimulus aimed at creating 830,000 new jobs in the coming year.

He also negotiated quarterly price controls on at least 175 of the thousands of products sold in supermarkets, but private economists say such measures have already failed to control inflation.

"The issue of inflation is fundamental, because it has wiped out the protection that social plans provided to the poor," said Jorge Oesterheld, spokesman for the Episcopal Conference of Argentine Catholic church leaders.

NBA Christmas Schedule 2013: Ranking Every Christmas Day Matchup

Tis the season to be an NBA fan.

Christmas has finally arrived, and one of the most superstar-laden days of the year is officially underway. The 2013-14 campaign has been full of surprises, and while they haven't all been merry, they've each contributed to the narrative we've encountered thus far.

Entering the 2013 holiday lineup, a number of games lack the luster they had when the schedule was released. The injury bug has been a real Scrooge this season, and as a result, the mystique surrounding teams like the Brooklyn Nets and Chicago Bulls is all but gone for the casual viewer.

But while a number of teams have disappointed, don't consider this year's lineup a lump of coal. Kevin Durant and LeBron James will take the court back-to-back on ABC, and then James Harden and Chris Paul will do the same on ESPN.

Finding time to catch each contest can be difficult amid family gatherings, but that's why we here at Bleacher Report have got you covered. The most enthusiastic of fans will watch all five games, but if that's not an option, you'll need a guide to the most watchable matchups.

Not every game has the intrigue of another, but all should be entertaining in their own right. Christmas Day is a time to be thankful for what we have, so forget about Kobe Bryant and Derrick Rose—this one is about good basketball being played on one of the most cheerful days of the season.

How the Grinch Stole NBA Christma

Continuing an NBA tradition, the league's best teams will take the floor against one another on Christmas in an unparalleled display of brilliant, luminous star power. Oh, and the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers will play, too.

I know this is the time of year when we're supposed to be thankful, but unless you've got a warped sense of gratitude, it's hard to feel any appreciation for the way so many of the league's hype-fueled franchises have fallen flat.

Things were supposed to be different for the Knicks, Bulls, Nets and Lakers, and we were supposed to enjoy watching them do battle on the league's annual holiday showcase.

But a green-tinged, bitter, creepily terrifying cartoon character with a heart two sizes too small snatched up some of the NBA's best gifts. And no, I'm not describing Pierre the Pelican—although he comes frighteningly close to meeting those grotesque specifications.

Crowds throng Bethlehem for Christmas

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world packed the West Bank town of Bethlehem for Christmas Eve celebrations on Tuesday, bringing warm holiday cheer to the biblical birthplace of Jesus on a cool, clear night.

The heavy turnout, its highest in years, helped lift spirits in Bethlehem as leaders expressed hope that the coming year would finally bring the Palestinians an independent state of their own.

"The message of Christmas is a message of peace, love and brotherhood. We have to be brothers with each other," said Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land, as he arrived in town.

Excited tourists milled about the town's Manger Square, stopping in restaurants and souvenir shops and admiring a large, illuminated Christmas Tree. Marching bands and scout troops performed for the visitors in the streets, and on a stage next to the tree.

Will Green of New York City, along with his wife, Debbie, and their 2-year-old daughter Daphne were among the crowds of people who greeted Twal's motorcade as he entered town from nearby Jerusalem.

Green said that being in Bethlehem for Christmas was a dream come true. "All the stories that we grew up with. It's here. It's part of our life. We heard them in the family, school and church. This is the birthplace," he said.

Green slowly pushed a stroller and his wife held their daughter as they followed a crowd toward the Church of the Nativity, built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was born.

Palestinian dignitaries greeted Twal at the entrance of Bethlehem. His motorcade crawled through the town's narrow streets as he stopped to shake hands and greet the throngs of visitors. It took him nearly 90 minutes to make the short trip to celebrate Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity compound.

Hundreds of people packed the compound for the service. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, and Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh were among the dignitaries in attendance.

In his homily, Twal addressed Abbas, telling the president he prays for a "just and equitable solution" for the Palestinians. Twal, himself a Palestinian, also expressed sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians, particularly families with relatives imprisoned by Israel or those who have suffered as a result of the conflict with Israel.

"The world is living through a long night of wars, destruction, fear, hate, racism and, at the present time, cold and snow," he said. Lamenting strife in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, he also urged worshippers "not to forget our own problems here: the prisoners and their families who hope for their release, the poor who have lost their land and their homes demolished, families waiting to be reunited, those out of work and all who suffer from the economic crisis."

Yet Twal called on people not to despair. "We are invited to be optimistic and to renew our faith that this land, home of the three monotheistic religions, will one day become a haven of peace for all people," he said.

"Oh Holy Child, God of goodness and mercy, look with kindness on the Holy Land and on our people who live in Palestine, in Israel, in Jordan and all the Middle East. Grant them the gift of reconciliation so that they may all be brothers — sons of one God," he said.

The number of visitors to Bethlehem remained below the record levels of the late 1990s, when Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts were at their height.

Following a Palestinian uprising that began in 2000, the numbers plunged. But thanks to a period of relative calm, they have been steadily climbing in recent years -- and got an extra push this year thanks to the resumption of peace talks.

"Our message is a message of justice and peace," said Palestinian Tourism Minister Rula Maayah. "We Palestinians are seeking peace and we deserve to have peace and our children deserve to live in peace."

Maayah said the number of visitors to Bethlehem was expected to jump by about 14 percent from last year.

A spokesman said 10,000 foreign visitors had entered town by the early evening, slightly higher than last year. Israel's Tourism Ministry, which coordinates the visits with the Palestinians, said the number could reach 25,000 during the holiday season.

Despite the Christmas cheer, Mideast politics loomed in the background. In order to enter Bethlehem, Twal's motorcade had to cross through the hulking concrete separation barrier that Israel built during the uprising. Israel says the barrier is needed to keep attackers from entering nearby Jerusalem, but Palestinians say the structure has stifled the town and stolen their land.

Maayah said that the barrier, along with nearby Israeli settlements and Israeli control of archaeological sites in the West Bank, has made it difficult to develop the tourism sector.

In addition, few Palestinians seem to think that the current round of peace talks will bear fruit. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry relaunched the talks last summer, but there have been no signs of progress.

Israel carried out a series of airstrikes and other attacks Tuesday in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the deadly shooting of an Israeli civilian who had been working along the border. The fighting, which left a 3-year-old Palestinian girl dead, was the heaviest in more than a year.

Christmas also serves as a reminder of the dwindling numbers of Christians who live in the Holy Land. Over the decades, tens of thousands of Christians have left, fleeing violence or in search of better opportunities overseas. Christians now make up a tiny percentage of the population.

Bethlehem is now only one-third Christian, with most residents Muslim. In an annual gesture, Israel permitted some 500 members of Gaza's small Christian community to leave the Hamas-ruled territory and cross through Israel to attend the celebrations in Bethlehem.

But for one night at least, residents and visitors brushed aside their troubles to celebrate the holiday.

Nick Parker, a student from Georgia Tech University, said he was enjoying the food and making friends with local residents and fellow travelers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiwsOaDBZkQ

The eternal debate of film versus digital. In a sense, arguing between the two for any practical purpose is pretty much a moot point, since digital has become the go-to in the world of photography. But that doesn't mean it's not fun to compare the two every so often. This series of animations asks you to do just that, in a dazzling way.

Filmmaker Joey Shanks in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios put together this short video with side-by-side experiments shot with a Canon 5D (digital) and a Canon 7E (film). It's kind of a strange test, because with so much movement in the frame it's hard to really see the details of each image. Moreover, the resolution of HD video probably isn't enough anyway to really do some serious examining.

But who cares because the video itself is just awesome to watch and just might come away with a new appreciation for the capability of digital, or the charm of film. [Youtube via ISO 1200]

The Largely Forgotten, Cynical Genius Behind A Christmas Story

hirty years ago, a little movie called A Christmas Story debuted. The period comedy—set in fictionalized suburban hamlet of Hohman, Indiana—found mild success at the box office when it first opened days before Thanksgiving, but by late December, it was no longer playing in most theaters. (The New York Times suggested "you [had] to possess the stamina of a pearl diver" to enjoy it.) If you celebrated Christmas in 1983, you almost certainly never heard of Ralphie Parker and his Red Ryder 200-shot range model air rifle, the greatest Christmas gift ever received

Pope Francis delivers his first Christmas homily

Pope Francis kisses a statue of baby Jesus as he celebrates the Christmas Eve Mass in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, on Dec. 24.

By Elisha Fieldstadt, NBC News
The faithful flocked to St. Peter's Basilica for Pope Francis' first Christmas Eve midnight Mass, in which the pontiff once again preached the importance of acceptance and humility, qualities he has demonstrated continually in his first nine months as head of the Catholic Church.
"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light," Francis began, quoting from Isaiah, a book of the Bible that includes prophesies foretelling the birth of Jesus.
Jesus brought light and grace to the world, and that grace "made salvation possible for the whole human race," Francis said, choosing to highlight a scripture from the biblical book of Titus.
While Jesus embodied light and love, Francis said, those who hate walk in "darkness."
"If we love God and our brothers and sisters, we walk in the light; but if our heart is closed, if we are dominated by pride, deceit, self-seeking, then darkness falls within us and around us," the pontiff said.

Pope Francis leads the midnight Christmas Mass in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican late on Dec. 24.

Francis has sought to change the image of the Catholic Church as a judgmental, lavish, inflexible institution since his election in March.
Of gay priests, he has asked, "who am I to judge?" He has washed the feet of prisoners, refused to move into the papal palace and celebrated his recent birthday breakfast with three homeless men. On Monday, he made a Christmas visit to Pope Emeritus Benedict and asked him to pray for him.
"(He) is bringing a new era into the Church, a Church that is focusing much more on the poor and that is more austere, more lively, a Church that cares about everyone in the world," said Dolores Di Benedetto, who travelled from the pope's homeland, Argentina to hear him speak.
“I thought it would be very nice to hear the words of this pope close up and to see how the people are overwhelmed by him," said Giacchino Sabello, one of more than 10,000 people who packed St. Peter's Basilica or stood outside watching the ceremony on mega-screens.
In Christmas Eve's Mass, Francis reiterated the importance of reaching out to the downtrodden, using the shepherds who were the first to hear of Jesus' birth as an example. "They were the first because they were among the last, the outcast," he said.
"We bless you, Lord God most high, who lowered yourself for our sake. You are immense, and you made yourself small; you are rich and you made yourself poor; you are all-powerful and you made yourself vulnerable," said Francis in thanks to God and also a clear indication of the humility he encourages his flock to emulate.
In his address to Vatican administrators on Saturday, Francis said holiness was a practice of "deep humility and fraternal charity in our relationships with our fellow workers," as he urged the cardinals, bishops and priests to avoid gossip.
Before the Mass, Francis further inspired meekness, when he personally placed a baby Jesus doll in a replica of a manger, a custom usually performed by an aid.
The 2 1/2-hour Mass was the first of many services Francis will lead during the holidays. On Christmas Day, he will deliver a "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message from the basilica's balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square.
He will also hold mass on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and another on Jan. 6, for the feast of the Epiphany or “Three Kings’ Day,” celebrating the Magi’s visit to the baby Jesus

Nigeria: Muslims, Christians Celebrate Christmas in Strife-Torn State

Nigeria is often depicted as being split between Muslims
and Christians. But in Adamawa, where a state of
emergency was declared to counter an Islamist insurgency,
members of both faiths celebrate Christmas together.
Phinear Padio hears the sound of the big iron gate opening.
His neighbor Muhammad Sani drives into the yard they
share. Padio is eager to greet him. The two meet frequently
to discuss everyday life in northern Nigeria. They talk about
their families and politics. But today Padio has a particular
request.
"You really must celebrate Christmas with us. You are most
cordially invited," Padio tells his neighbor. Sani nods. "The
past two years, I wasn't in Yola over Christmas so we
couldn't celebrate together. I'm glad it will work out this
year," he said.
Yola is the capital of Adamawa state in north-eastern
Nigeria. It is one of the three states in which a state of
emergency was declared in May 2013. This is because the
state is at the focus of terrorist activities by the militant
Islamist sect Boko Haram. They attack villages and kill
Christians or students of "western" schools.
Sharing the Christmas cookies
Muhammad Sani and his entire family are Muslim.
Nevertheless, he thinks it is important to join his Christian
neighbors and friends when they celebrate Christmas. "We
enjoy celebrating together," Sani said. "On Christmas Day,
my neighbors always give me food - cookies, chicken and
rice," he added with a chuckle. "During the Muslim
festivals, we also do the same and invite the Christians," he
explained.
The two neighbors are no exception in Nigeria. In many
parts of the country, Christians and Muslims celebrate their
most important religious festivals together. In states such
as Adamawa, everyday life is not dominated by unending
discussions about religion.
Some observers focus on the antagonism between the two
faiths, probably because of the numerous attacks carried
out by Boko Haram. Recent estimates by the United Nations
say that more than 1,200 people have been killed in
violence linked to Boko Haram since May 2013.
Christians and Muslims under one roof
"It's a pity that people in other countries get the impression
that Christians are fighting Muslims. That's not true at all,
"said Muhammad Sani. "Christians and Muslims live
together peacefully. Even in a family, there may be different
religions."
Phinear's wife, Alice, has experienced this peaceful
coexistence first-hand.
She grew up with an aunt who was a Muslim. "For us it was
very normal and not a problem," she said putting up the
Christmas decorations. She has already hung up a string of
lights in addition to a small tapestry from Jerusalem, which
her husband brought back from his last pilgrimage.
Her face beaming with delight, the 29 -year-old woman is
clearly looking forward to Christmas. "They are all coming,
my neighbors and my friends," she said referring to her
Christmas guests. The fact that there will be more Muslims
than Christians present is not something Alice finds
unusual. "Here in Yola my best friends are Muslims. We
talk, we eat together, we do everything together. There is
no difference between us," she said.
Muhammad Sani stresses the significance of tolerance for
peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians.
"Here there is no space for radical ideas," he said. Radical
elements would therefore find it difficult to recruit
followers.
"The majority of residents in Adamawa belong to the Fulani
ethnic group," Sani said. "There are an uncomplicated
people and most of them practice Islam. But Adamawa is
not like other states, there is no Sharia law," he said.
This tolerance is the reason why many Christians,
especially the Ibos from the east, have chosen to live in
Adamawa. "We are very liberal," Sani said.

Car bomb attack on Egypt police building kills 14

Mansoura (Egypt) (AFP) - A car bomb tore through a police building in an Egyptian city early Tuesday, killing at least 14 people, an attack the authorities said was aimed at derailing the country's transition to democracy.
Hours after the bombing, prime minister Hazem Beblawi labelled the Muslim Brotherhood, the banned movement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, a "terrorist" group, though the premier did not blame the organisation for the blast.

APC Commends Reps Report On Oduah, Says Jonathan Should Proof Anti-Corruption Stance By Firing Minister

The All Progressives Congress has hailed the House of Representatives for its stand on the N255m armoured cars scandal involving the Minster of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, following the adoption of the recommendation of its Committee on Aviation, which called on President Goodluck Jonathan to “review the continued engagement of the minister over her role in the scam”.

In a statement in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital on Monday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said by its action, “the House of Representatives has again signalled its readiness to play its own part in fighting the massive corruption which has enveloped the country.”

The opposition party added that “by its unequivocal stand on the scandal, coming on the heels of the recent criticism of President Jonathan’s tepid fight against corruption by House Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, the House has left no one in doubt that the legislature is taking its oversight role very seriously”.

The APC said, “There is no doubt that the House of Representatives took its stand, which included asking the EFCC to investigate and prosecute all those involved in the scandal, after a painstaking work by its Committee on Aviation. This action is commendable and reflects the general opinion of Nigerians on the shameful scandal.

“Therefore, Ms. Oduah has no basis for continued occupation of her post as Minister of Aviation and should step down immediately. If she fails to do so, she should be fired by the President”.

APC said if the Minister failed to resign and the President refuses to relieve her of her appointment, it would confirm the general perception across the country that “this President is not ready or willing to fight corruption; that he is comfortable in the company of corrupt officials”.

The party said the failure of Mr. Jonathan to heed the recommendation of the House of Representatives on Oduahgate would also add to “his earlier failure to act on the House’s decision on the massive oil subsidy scam and the failure of his administration to bring to justice all those behind the series of corruption cases that have dogged the administration”.

It added, “The list is long, and includes the pension scam, the Malabu scandal, the massive corruption in SEC, the Halliburton scandal, the unprecedented crude oil theft and the extensive corruption in the oil sector.

”The President’s decision to hug corruption rather than fight it has also been reflected in his comments; for example that the perception people have about corruption in Nigeria is exaggerated; and that his administration is ‘winning’ the war against corruption”.

Benue: Curfew Imposed As 10 Die In Fulani Herdsmen Clash With Goatsellers

dusk to dawn curfew was yesterday imposed on Otukpo town by the Chairman, Otukpo Local Government Area, Dr. Innocent Onuh, as no fewer than 15 persons were feared dead in clashes between Fulani herdsmen and goat sellers in Guma and Otukpo local government areas of Benue State.

Otukpo council chairman was forced to impose the movement restrictions in the town following an escalation of the crisis that erupted when some Hausa goat sellers flouted the directive of the council to desist from trading at the town’s central mosque, according to Vanguard sources.

“Their arrest sparked angry reaction from Muslim youths in the area, who felt that their kins were being unduly harassed.

“They resorted to making bonfires directly on the highway, which led to heavy traffic jam on either side of the road that links the north and eastern part of the country.

“After failing to convince the youths to leave the road, Police resorted to shooting into the air to scare them away, which led to a stampede and the death of one Zakari and the injury of eight others.

“Despite spirited efforts to check the crisis, it continued into the night and early hours of Monday (yesterday) leaving four more persons dead and property destroyed,” the source said.

Onuh confirmed the decision of the council to impose curfew on the ancient town, adding that “security personnel have moved in to restore peace in the affected areas.”

No fewer than 10 people may have been killed while many houses have also been burnt down by rampaging Fulani herdsmen at Nzorov and Gbajimba in Guma local government area of the state.

Sources in the communities disclosed that the strike on the communities was a reprisal attack by the herdsmen, who decided to avenge an earlier attack on them by yet to be identified youths of the area.

The source said: “As I speak with you, about 10 persons may have been killed by rampaging herdsmen who have also set several houses ablaze in the communities and are also heading towards the centre of the council headquarters.

“We learnt that the herdsmen vowed they would not allow us celebrate Christmas in our homes.”

Pres. Jonathan summons Stella Oduah for closed door meeting

Following renewed calls for the sack of the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah over the recent bullet proof car scandal by the House of representatives, Ms. Oduah is said to have had an impromptu meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan.

The minister came under fire earlier this year when details of the car purchase, to the tune of N225 million, were revealed.

The president is said to have summoned the minister for a previously unscheduled, closed-door meeting which lasted more than 2 hours.

Leadership reports:

The meeting between President Jonathan and the minister which lasted over two hours is generating tension in certain quarters over her job, as some presidency sources say it might not be unconnected with the scandal bordering on financial irregularities in the purchase of two bulletproof cars to the tune of  by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authorities (NCAA) for the minister.

Another source at the presidency told LEADERSHIP, however that the minister was overheard saying she was at the president’s office to invite him for a programme being organised by the Aviation ministry.

This is the first time the minister is coming on her own to meet with the president in his office since the scandal that rocked the aviation ministry over the BMW bulletproof cars.

Besides, her visit to the president yesterday was quite unusual; this is even so as most ministers had travelled out of Abuja for the Christmas celebration after the last Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for the year which held last week Wednesday.

Clad in a coffee kampala gown with a wine head scarf and bag to match, Oduah arrived Aso Villa at about 2.45pm in the company of one of her aides.

She walked sluggishly with her head bowed to the ground a she entered the president’s office and was there over two hours.

The Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim also came in at about the same time to see the president, but it was not clear whether he was part of the meeting.

The minister came out of the president’s office at about 5:17pm, just about 20 minutes after the SGF had left. She wore the same pensive look which characterised her movement when she came to the place earlier on.

Following the N255 million armoured cars’ scandal in the ministry, President Jonathan had been under intense pressure to sack the minister.

The House of Representatives had also asked the president to sack the minister for violating the constitutional provision in the acquisition of the armoured cars, a position which the minister condemned.

MEET Nigeria’s Hairiest Woman Who Has Dreams Of Been An Actress tells her touching story

Her name is Queen Okafor and she resides in Lagos. Before now little or nothing was heard of Queen. But Queen decided to speak to a National Newspaper, not to ask Nigerians for help, but alert NGO’s to come to the aid of people with rare disabilities as hers. According to Queen, people look at her embarrassingly whenever she steps out. She said she lived a normal live until she was 21 when hair started growing all over her body. According to Queen who is now 26, she inherited this from her mother. Once you get to 21 to 23 years in my family, you start experiencing hair growth, she said. I want people to treat me like a normal human being and I will also love to appear in movies, Queen said. She also said she is in a relationship at the moment, and believes she will get married and have kids at the right time. See another picture of Queen after the cut.

First Lady Did Not Benefit from Duty Waivers

Dame Patience Jonathan

The Federal Government has described an online report that a duty waiver was granted the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience Jonathan  as a complete distortion.

Reacting to the online report in a statement last night, the Federal Ministry of Finance said the so-called waivers scandal “in which the notorious news website made outrageous allegations against the Office of the First Lady is a false exclusive based on distorted information.”

The statement, which was issued by Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu—Special Adviser to the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said  the online publication merely extracted and distorted information on the list of beneficiaries of the revised waivers policy, which the Ministry of Finance voluntarily published as part of its drive for transparency and accountability.

Boko Haram: Borno Residents Ask Jonathan To Relocate To Maiduguri And Face War Against Insurgency"

Following the last Friday attack on the 202 tank Mohammed Kur Barrack Bama, located at Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, in the course of which a lot of soldiers were killed and armories carted away, Borno residents have called on President Goodluck Jonathan to relocate to Maiduguri until the insurgents are crushed.

A public commentator Mallam Abduraham said that President Goodluck Jonathan was busy thinking about 2015, instead of taking the fight against Boko Haram with all seriousness.

He said if the insurgents could sack a whole Barack and cart away armories, "there is great danger ahead of us as a nation, the way things are going, the insurgents would capture Borno, Yobe and Adamawa and will advance to other states."

According to Mr. Abduraham, President Jonathan has to fight the insurgents with all seriousness, noting if he does not, the way things are moving, the insurgents will take over the whole country.

He added that instead of the military taking the battle to the Boko Haram terrorists camps, they allow themselves to be on the defensive side.

"The military should change their strategy, otherwise, the insurgents will take over the country," Abdulrrahaman said.

He said there was need for President Jonathan and the service chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri until they see to the end of the insurgency.

One of Bama residents who asked the journalists not to disclose his name, said that considering the attack on the barracks, he was thinking about the option of running to Cameroon.

For Mr. Daniel Audu, the state of emergency declared on the three states was of no effect. He pointed out:

"If the insurgents could take over a barracks, hoist their flag and later leave the premises unchallenged, there is great danger ahead of us as a nation."

Thus, residents urge Jonathan to face the war against insurgency instead of thinking about 2015 elections.

With Steve Jobs' Passing, so Has Large-scale Innovation

Everyone knows and understands the mindset and the creativity that was Steve Jobs. Steve was a pioneer in so many things technology. Devices and innovations that the world takes for granted nowadays would not be in existence if not for the work of Steve and Apple. But one only has to look around, online and in stores, at the current tech device offerings to realize that the days of large scale, ground-breaking, innovative products have disappeared with Steve's passing. It is as if the creativity wheels stopped turning once the technology king was gone.

The current market of computers and media devices are a mixture of me-toos and semi-nextgen products. Tablets, MP3 players and smartphones are all regurgitated incarnations of devices past. These products are the same, except for a little more memory here, a little more battery life there and maybe a dash of extra pixels. All of this is interesting, but none of it is new or innovative to say the least. Tech consumers are forced to swallow the bitter pill that is "last year's device" with a few extra bells and lights.

But technology fans are used to the idea of next generation products. We are used to seeing updates and upgrades, as technology improves under the same device generation. But what is troubling is the trend of introducing updated and upgraded devices as "new" devices. This is a technology cop-out that does a huge dis-service to technology consumers. The modern "Techsumer," by virtue of his knowledge of technology, expects nothing less than new technology PRODUCTS from year to year, not updates and upgrades marketed as new products. For the most part this has happened -- until Steve passed away, that is.

Today there are no new breakthrough devices -- at least not from Apple, who "was" the default king of technology devices. Apple has given way to Samsung, LG, Google and others who realized (most unknowingly) that once Steve was gone, the walls of the Kingdom of Apple would soon start to crumble. Without Steve's tenacity and guidance, Apple would be taken over by paper-pushers and accountants, who have little or no creative blood in the veins to speak of. Hence the current array of "nothing new" Apple products.

Creatives tend to struggle in the business world. Our ideals and concepts do not speak to profit, nor do they speak to ease-of manufacturing or low cost. Creatives are the engine that generates all that is new and exciting, ground breaking, and game changing. Steve was a Creative. But what he brought along with that creativity, was the balls to force the paper-pushers into not making me-too products. He was a Creative Driver.

What is left for us currently is a mass of kinda cool, kinda better products. Nothing awe-inspiring, nothing truly paradigm shifting, nothing really original, and nothing innovative.

There is now a place in the technology realm for a new king. Someone who would take the wheels of creativity, roll up their sleeves, and start challenging the status quo with actual new products. The question remains -- who will this person be?

Arsenal and Chelsea draw keeps Liverpool top

Under teeming north London skies, Arsenal and Chelsea played out a goalless draw -- but that was good enough to lift Arsenal level on points with league leaders Liverpool.

Manchester City are third, just one point ahead of Chelsea, as a tight Premier League title fight edged into the festive period.

For the last four seasons, the team who topped the table at Christmas have gone on to lift the silverware at the end of the season but in the overall history of the Premier League only 10 of the 21 Christmas leaders have gone on to clinch the title.

Livepool and Arsenal are tied on 36 points -- with the Merseyside club ahead on goal difference -- while the top eight clubs are separated by just eight points.

The match at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium had survived the rain and high winds that had lashed much of the United Kingdom Monday.

Referee Mike Dean examined the pitch and gave the game the green light but, in a tentative start to the game, the players had to adjust to the blustery and slippery conditions.

It was a good 20 minutes before Olivier Giroud had a sniff of a chance for Arsenal as he waited in the box for Bacary Sagna's pass only to be denied by the out-stretched leg of Gary Cahill.

At the other end, Ramires headed over the bar while a rocket from Frank Lampard clattered the underside of the bar, although the ball did not cross the goal line.

As the half began to hot up, Arsenal appealed for a penalty after Chelsea winger Willian took a swipe at Theo Walcott but, at the break, the players sought shelter from the London rain with no goals to show for their endeavours.

How Fuel Efficient Should Your Car Be?

Americans aren't known for their willingness to buy fuel efficient cars. After all, this is a country that has a lot of wide open space still and cities where you almost never have to parallel park. Our fuel is cheap compared to other countries, too, so why not buy something with a massive V8 that's also 18 feet long?

RELATED

VW And Audi Sold More Than 100,000 Diesels In The US This Year
Venezuelans have long taken advantage of cheap gas, too. But in today's TMS, the days of nickel gas could be fading away, forcing people to ditch things like Ford LTDs for much smaller and more efficient cars. According to The Associated Press, even the late president Hugo Chavez "once confessed it pained him to practically give away fuel to luxury car owners." Just as in this country, some people abuse the fact our gas is much cheaper and buy something that makes no sense at all.

But isn't that our right to choose?

Bob Loblaw Made Me Make a Phoney Phone Call to Edward Rooney wondered:

What does "should be commuting in slightly more efficient vehicles" mean? How does one define what level of efficiency you should be achieving?
CrymeLord has an idea:

It's a good question. I don't think there is a hard and fast answer, but the spirit of the comment seems to be this: when you have an abundance of something with very little cost associated with it you tend to waste it. It's human nature.

In the US we had no inclination to even start developing more efficient cars until the oil embargoes of the 70s and even then we stopped caring after that scare right up until near when gas prices started to soar in the 2000s.

I'd say that people should be daily commuting in cars that have MPGs in at least the 20s.
Which actually connected back to the top story in TMS today: Volkswagen and Audi shifted more than 100,000 diesels in the U.S. in 2013. Imagine how many more they could sell if diesel didn't still have a stigma that makes people stick with gasoline engines, even though a diesel could suit their driving habits. Also imagine how many more they'd move if diesel and regular gas were a similar price more often.

If the price of fuel was dirt cheap, though, should we still be able to buy something like a BMW M3 and drive it no more enthusiastically than we would a 328d? That just sounds like a waste of everything.

Half the U.S. is already covered with snow

Last week, snow covered more than half of the continental United States, the highest this measure has reached by this date in a decade, according to government scientists.

As of Dec. 15, snow covered 53 percent of the Lower 48, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported. That’s a significantly higher portion than in recent years. In 2006, for example, snow covered just 12 percent of those states on the same date, according to Climate Central, a climate news Web site.

November and early December have also been quite chilly for much of the country, below the 20th-century average, Climate Central noted. “With the noteworthy exception of Alaska, nearly every state was affected by the unusually cold air at some point during the November-to-December timeframe,” Climate Central reported.

What’s going on?

An unusual configuration of the jet stream has caused record heat in Alaska and corresponding below-average temperatures in the Lower 48. This strange jet stream has brought warm air from the Pacific into Alaska, and cold Arctic air south into the continental United States, NOAA reported.

While the United States has had a cold start to winter, the rest of the world was warmer than average in November. “According to NASA, November was the warmest such month on record worldwide since reliable instrument temperature data began being collected in 1880,” Climate Central reported.

In fact, the only areas of the globe that were cooler than usual in November were the central and eastern United States and part of Antarctica. And those few cold spots don’t counteract the overall global warming trend: The top 10 hottest Novembers in NASA’s data set have all occurred since 2001, according to Climate Central.

While the large snowpack in the continental United States was largely the result of typical fluctuation in weather unrelated to climate change, it’s possible that snowfalls in the United States might increase in the future with global warming, said Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

“If you warm up the atmosphere, you can actually get heavier snowfalls in winter” because warmer air can hold more moisture, Trenberth said. “That’s one of the ironic things about global warming.
